First Prize winner of three international piano competitions, including the prestigious Leeds International Piano Competition (2003), Finnish pianist Antti Siirala has already established himself as a star on the international stage. At the age of twenty-eight, he has worked with numerous renowned conductors, among them Paavo Berglund, Thierry Fischer, Mikko Franck, Kristjan Järvi, Neemi Järvi, Fabio Luisi, Susanna Mälkki, Sakari Oramo, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Jukka-Pekka Sarasted, and Osmo Vänskä.
Mr. Siirala’s engagements include appearances with the Detroit Symphony, BBC Symphony, Liverpool Philharmonic, Irish National Symphony, Orchestre National de Belgique, Orchestre National de Lille, NDR Radiophilharmonie Hannover, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, WDR Sinfonieorchester Köln, the Swedish National Orchestra, Sinfonia Varsovia, Wiener Symphoniker, St. Petersburg Symphony, and the orchestras of Melbourne and Queensland, among others. He has also appeared in recital at London’s Wigmore Hall, the Cologne Philharmonie, the festivals of Bolzano, Bath and Kilkenny, the Internationale Pianisten in Mainz and in Dortmund, Hannover, Wuppertal, Leverkusen, Aix-les-Bains, Porto, Detroit and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
In 2004, Antti Siirala’s debut in Brussels exemplified his spontaneity and flexibility. Asked to step in for the concert’s suddenly indisposed conductor, Mr. Siirala enthusiastically led the orchestra from the piano in Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3. Following the intermission, he further delighted the audience with a “splendid rendition” of Beethoven’s Diabelli Variations in place of the scheduled Third Symphony of Brahms. He was immediately re-engaged for concerts with the Orchestre National and a recital at the Palais des Beaux Arts.
Mr. Siirala’s debut recording of Schubert transcriptions for Naxos in 2003 received outstanding reviews. The following year, his recording of works by Brahms for Ondine received Gramophone Magazine’s “Editor’s Choice” award, and the highest rating in the category of interpretation from Piano News.
At the heart of Antti Siirala’s repertoire are the compositions of Beethoven and Brahms. This season, he continues his cycle of the complete Beethoven piano works at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki.
Also a champion of new music, Mr. Siirala has premiered works by Walter Gieseler, Kuldar Sink, Uljas Pulkkis, and Kalevi Aho.
